MEPs Visit Tbilisi, Meet with Opposition Leaders
A meeting between MEPs (Members of the European Parliament) and leaders from Georgia’s opposition group “Coalition for Change” took place recently. Nika Melia, one of the leaders, spoke about the visit.
Melia said that any statement or resolution made by MEPs is welcome. However, in a situation where hundreds of people are being tortured on the streets of Tbilisi every week and the regime is becoming increasingly brutal, time is not on their side. He emphasized that international partners have come to realize that statements and resolutions need to be implemented.
Melia pointed out that when a resolution is issued, it must be enforced in order to maintain its value. If not, the document may lose its significance. He stressed that the Georgian state is currently in international isolation due to the regime’s actions.
In this context, Melia stated that MEPs should know that their position and any resolution they issue are welcome. However, with hundreds of people being tortured on the streets and the regime becoming more brutal by the day, not a single day can be wasted. He expressed his hope that the international partners understand the will and desire of the Georgian people.
