Tougher Sanctions for Georgia, Says Activist
Georgia’s government is facing tougher sanctions due to the country‘s disputed elections. According to Dimitri Tskitishvili, a member of the “Gakharia for Georgia” group, this is part of international pressure on the government.
Sanctions are being applied because of the theft of the elections and violations of human rights in the country. These sanctions include specific people being added to the “Magnitsky Act list”, which means their names will be made public, and they may not even be able to get visas. Tskitishvili believes that the whole government and other officials are on this list.
The steps taken by the United States against Georgia depend on how the country’s government behaves. If it continues to ignore protests and do nothing about the crisis in the country, things will only get worse. The US statement did not mention the Georgian government, but instead referred to “Georgian Dream”.
Tskitishvili says that the US does not just make decisions based on personalities, but rather has a procedural democracy. This means that if there is a violation of human rights, something will be done about it regardless of who is in power.
The activist believes that Georgia’s government is trying to buy time by saying they are coordinating with the Trump administration. However, this is just a myth and does not change the fact that the country faces tougher sanctions.
