**Trump Wants Europe to Lead in Ukraine Conflict**
US President Donald Trump met with Ukrainian and French leaders on December 7. He made it clear that he wants Europe to take charge of stopping Russian aggression.
Mr. Trump has promised to end the war within 24 hours and reduce US involvement in Ukraine. His team is working on proposals, but they will be finalized later when his national security team is in place.
Some European leaders are discussing sending peacekeepers to Ukraine. French President Emmanuel Macron suggested this idea to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. However, Mr. Tusk said that Poland is not considering such a proposal.
During the Paris meeting, Mr. Trump repeated his opposition to Ukraine joining NATO. He wants Ukraine to stay strong and well-armed after the war. Ukraine has been trying to join NATO for some time.
Mr. Trump also asked European leaders to pressure China into making Russia stop the conflict. He suggested tariffs on Chinese goods as a way to do this.
Earlier, it was reported that Mr. Trump’s team is considering delaying Ukraine’s NATO membership for at least 20 years in exchange for continued arms supplies from the West.
Mr. Trump told Time magazine that he will not “abandon” Ukraine. Instead, he plans to use US support as a way to pressure Russia into negotiating a peace deal. He also criticized the Biden administration for allowing long-range strikes inside Russia.
