European groups say Georgia‘s new president is not chosen by people.
The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) and Liberal International have spoken out against the new president of Georgia. They say the way he was chosen does not reflect what most Georgians want.
The groups are unhappy with how a new president was elected by an electoral college made up mostly of members from one party. This group, “Georgian Dream”, got into power after elections that some people disputed.
The European groups think these elections did not let opposition parties have a voice. They believe this means the new president does not truly represent the will of the Georgian people.
They still support the country‘s current president, Salome Zurabishvili. She was elected in a fair way and has worked to get Georgia closer to joining the European Union and NATO.
The groups are also unhappy with “Georgian Dream” for what they call unconstitutional actions. They think this has caused democracy to take a step back in Georgia.
