**Slovak President Says Peace in Ukraine May Come with Territorial Loss**
Slovakia’s President Peter Pellegrini has spoken about the need for peace in Ukraine. He said that achieving peace would likely require Ukraine to accept some territorial losses.
In an interview on December 15, Pellegrini told Slovakia’s public broadcaster STVR that he believes it is unrealistic to expect Ukraine to keep all its territory without losing some of it. He called for immediate peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.
This comes ahead of the inauguration of the new US President, who has promised to help get Ukraine and Russia to talk about peace. Pellegrini also previously said that Ukraine should not be allowed to join the NATO military alliance immediately, as this would not be realistic during wartime.
Pellegrini is an ally of Prime Minister Robert Fico, who has been a vocal critic of helping Ukraine with military aid and has supported sanctions against Russia. In December, Fico criticized the EU for supporting Ukraine too strongly, saying that their words did not match the conclusions of the European Union.
Fico halted military aid to Ukraine from Slovak Armed Forces’ stocks after taking office in September 2023. He recently accepted an invitation to attend Victory Day celebrations in Moscow next May, which has been seen as a significant foreign policy reversal.
