**Germany’s Ruling Party Opposes Sending Taurus Missiles to Ukraine**
The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) has announced that it opposes sending Taurus long-range missiles to Ukraine. This decision is part of the party’s pre-election program, which was obtained by DPA news agency.
Germany has been a strong supporter of Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in February 2022. However, Berlin has been hesitant to provide Taurus missiles to Ukraine. These missiles are needed to hit targets deeper within Russian-occupied territories and disrupt Russian military operations.
The party fully supports German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s current position on sending Tauruses to Kyiv. Instead, the SPD backs the future deployment of US long-range missiles on German territory and increasing defense spending to at least two percent of the gross domestic product.
**SPD Faces Low Poll Numbers**
Recently, polls have shown that the SPD may lose power after the Bundestag elections scheduled for February next year. The party’s current support is at 17%, which is significantly lower compared to the conservative CDU/CSU bloc, which holds 31%.
**Far-Right Party Gains Popularity**
Meanwhile, Tino Chrupalla, co-chair of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, has called on the government to recognize Russia as the winner in the war against Ukraine. His party is gaining popularity and may become the second-largest party in the German federal parliament.
