**UK Sanctions 20 Russian “Shadow Fleet” Vessels**
The United Kingdom has sanctioned 20 vessels that are part of Russia’s “shadow fleet”. These ships transport Russian products around the world, violating international sanctions. The UK has also pledged £35 million in aid to help Ukraine repair its energy grid.
Russia’s shadow fleet is made up of semi-legal cargo ships that carry Russian oil and other goods. An estimated 70% of Russia’s seaborne oil exports are transported by these old and poorly insured tankers. This poses a significant threat to the environment and helps fund Russia’s war efforts.
The UK has already sanctioned over 100 ships for transporting Russian energy, including 93 oil tankers. The newly sanctioned vessels include the Ocean Faye, Andaman Skies, and Mianzimu, which are expected to carry more than 4 million barrels of Russian oil by the end of 2024.
**Ukraine’s Energy Crisis**
Russia has repeatedly targeted Ukraine’s power grid with missile attacks, causing widespread damage. The UK’s aid package will be used to repair Ukraine’s electricity transmission network and provide additional power generation capacity.
**Escalating Tensions**
Tensions between NATO and Russia are escalating, with reports of North Korean soldiers fighting alongside Russian forces in Ukraine. Ukraine has also reported the deaths of 50 North Korean soldiers and injuries to 47 others.
South Korea has imposed sanctions on 11 individuals and 15 entities involved in illegal military cooperation between Russia and North Korea. The Ukrainian government has called for international support, saying that both the US and EU must help achieve a better negotiating position for Ukraine.
