**Russia Rejects Plan to Freeze Ukraine War**
Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s Ambassador to the UN, has rejected proposals to freeze the war between Russia and Ukraine. He made this clear during a meeting of the UN Security Council on December 16, 2024.
Nebenzya said that any plan to pause the fighting would not suit Russia. He claimed that Ukraine and its Western allies cannot be trusted. He argued that a ceasefire would only give Ukraine time to rearm and recover from the war.
**Russia’s Demands for Peace**
The Russian diplomat outlined his country’s conditions for ending the war. These include recognition of Russian control over occupied territories, such as Crimea and parts of eastern Ukraine. Ukraine must also adopt a neutral status and demilitarize its forces. Russia does not want NATO to be involved in any peace process.
**Ukraine Reacts**
Ukraine’s Ambassador to the UN, Serhii Kyslytsia, responded to Nebenzya’s comments. He said that Russia has attacked Ukraine’s energy infrastructure 12 times in 2024 alone, launching over 1,100 missiles at these targets. This is a war crime, and Ukraine demands that the international community holds Russia accountable.
Kyslytsia also criticized Russia’s position in the war, saying that its neo-imperial ambitions are unraveling. He emphasized that recognition of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty is essential for any lasting peace agreement.
