EU to Suspend Visa-Free Regime for Georgian Diplomats
The European Union has agreed to suspend the visa-free regime for holders of diplomatic passports from Georgia. This was announced by EU High Representative Kaja Kallas at a press conference in Brussels.
Kallas stated that the situation in Georgia is not improving and that the EU will take further action. She said that democratic countries do not restrict media freedom or silence opposition voices. In response, the European Union has already reduced political contacts with Georgia and stopped funding the country’s government.
The EU High Representative also announced plans to impose sanctions on Georgian officials who have been involved in violence against peaceful protesters. Kallas emphasized that the EU will continue to support the people of Georgia, not just their government.
She said that the EU will redirect its funding from the government to independent media and civil society organizations. This is because the future of Georgia belongs to its people, not just its leaders.
