Georgia’s President Salome Zurabishvili recently spoke to the European Parliament. She said that people in Georgia protest when they feel their freedom and independence are at risk.
President Zurabishvili stated that mass protests have never happened in Georgia due to social problems. However, she acknowledged that these issues exist and are not being solved.
People took to the streets in large numbers only when they felt a threat to their “Europeanness” – a sense of belonging to European values and culture. President Zurabishvili said this feeling is driving the current protests against the government.
The president described the current movement as peaceful, with protesters demanding new elections and the return of their stolen votes. She emphasized that this is not a revolutionary movement, but rather a call for democracy and free choice.
