North Korean Troops Fighting Alongside Russia

Reports from the US and Ukraine confirm that are fighting alongside forces in a region of Ukraine. This area, called Oblast, is currently experiencing military operations.

In October 2024, it was reported that around 10,000 Korean troops were sent to Russia to help with military operations against Ukraine. The US and Ukrainian governments have now confirmed this information. They say the North Koreans are trying to get economic and military supplies from Russia in exchange for their help.

US officials have said that they have seen North Korean soldiers moving into frontline positions in recent days. However, they did not give a specific number of how many soldiers have been hurt or killed.

The Ukrainian President has accused Russian forces of trying to hide the presence of North Korean soldiers by burning the faces of dead soldiers and telling them not to show their faces during training. It is also believed that Russia may be disguising the North Koreans as soldiers from another region, called the Republic of Buryatia.

The Institute for the Study of (ISW) has analyzed this situation and believes that the ‘s strategy of not acknowledging the presence of serves a specific purpose. By keeping quiet about these foreign fighters, Russia can keep its image intact by saying it does not need help from other countries to take back its territory.
