Ukraine’s President Meets EU Leaders in Brussels
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with top European leaders on December 19. He discussed how to help Ukraine and the importance of a “just peace” with Western countries.
Zelensky said that he needs unity between Europe, the US, and other countries to stop Russian attacks. He said this is key to saving Ukraine from Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.
The leaders talked about protecting Ukraine’s energy system from Russian air attacks. They also discussed increasing Ukraine’s ability to defend itself by making more weapons at home.
In a separate meeting, Zelensky met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. They discussed Ukraine joining the EU and using frozen Russian money for Ukraine’s needs.
Earlier this month, the US announced it will give Ukraine $20 billion in loans. This is part of a bigger plan by G7 countries to help Ukraine with $50 billion. The EU also said it will give Ukraine 18.1 billion euros ($18.8 billion) in aid. The first payment will be made in January 2025.
