Seventeen countries have issued a joint statement condemning the use of violence by Georgia’s ruling party, “Georgian Dream”. The countries are part of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).
The signatory countries include the US, UK, Germany, France, Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Norway, Poland, Romania, and Sweden. They strongly condemn the violence used by “Georgian Dream” against Georgian citizens.
These countries have worked with Georgia for over 30 years to support democracy, economy, and education. However, they are now dismayed that “Georgian Dream” continues to use repressive tactics to silence critics. The statement calls on Georgia to stop using excessive violence and release people who were detained for peacefully expressing their rights.
The countries also urge Georgia to investigate those responsible for the unlawful use of force. They will explore all mechanisms within the OSCE context to address this issue. The signatory countries continue to support Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, but encourage Georgia to return to the path of European integration that most Georgians desire.
