Germany Will Not Send Troops to Ukraine While War Continues
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said that German soldiers will not be deployed to Ukraine as long as the war with Russia is ongoing. He stated this in an interview with the Funke media group.
Pistorius said that Germany’s military presence in Ukraine would only begin once a peace agreement or ceasefire is reached. This means that German troops might arrive later, when the situation on the ground has stabilized.
The decision to send troops requires approval from the German parliament, Pistorius added. This shows that the deployment of German forces will depend on various factors and may take time.
Macron‘s Proposal
In February, French President Emmanuel Macron suggested sending a European military contingent to Ukraine. The proposal was initially met with little Western support but has gained traction again in recent weeks.
One discussed option is freezing the frontlines and deploying a European contingent as a security guarantee for Ukraine. However, Poland has stated that it does not plan to send troops to Ukraine.
Zelenskyy’s Meeting
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently met with Macron in Brussels. While details of their discussions were not shared, Zelenskyy described the process as “complex.” This suggests that negotiations regarding peacekeeping forces are ongoing and may take time.
