Georgian PM Defends Election Results
The Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, has spoken out against any attempts to call new elections. He says it would be both comical and a crime for President Salome Zurabishvili to make such an announcement.
Kobakhidze pointed out that there are specific grounds in the Constitution and legislation for calling new elections. These include when the Central Election Commission (CEC) or a court annuls the election results, or when the Parliament expresses no confidence in the Government.
None of these conditions apply in this case. The CEC has already summarized the election results, and all complaints were considered in court. The Constitutional Court also confirmed the legitimacy of the elections.
The next elections are not due until the 4-year term of the Parliament expires. Early elections can only be called if the Parliament expresses no confidence in the Government, which is not the case here.
Kobakhidze said that someone smart should have advised President Zurabishvili against making such a decision. He gave her until 9 PM tonight to think about it.
