Transparency International Georgia Calls for Change in Pretrial Detention
The Executive Director of Transparency International Georgia, Eka Gigauri, is calling on the Prosecutor’s Office to intervene in court cases involving individuals arrested during protests. She believes that there is no evidence to justify their imprisonment.
Gigauri claims that judges who imposed pretrial detention on these individuals are biased and acting in favor of the ruling party. She has named several judges who she says are carrying out the instructions of the Prosecutor’s Office.
The judges in question include Tamar Mchedlishvili, Irakli Khuskivadze, Lela Maridashvili, Levan Qolbaia, Davit Mgeliashvili, Nana Shamathava, and Davit Kurtanidze. Gigauri believes that these judges are not serving the public interest but rather fulfilling the interests of the ruling party.
Transparency International Georgia is demanding that the Prosecutor’s Office change the pretrial detention of these individuals to a different preventive measure. They claim that detainees have been subjected to inhuman treatment and torture, and have been forced to give specific testimonies under pressure.
The organization believes that procedural guarantees for searches and seizures are not being met in these cases. As a result, they are asking the Prosecutor’s Office to intervene with a motion to change the pretrial detention of those arrested during protests to a different preventive measure.
