Georgian President Warns of Regime Collapse
The President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili, has made a video address to the nation. She warns that if a compromise is not reached, the country may face regime collapse before elections.
According to Zurabishvili, no one has interfered in the collapse of the regime except those in power who have failed to act quickly enough. She states that “the regime will collapse on its own.”
The President is calling for dialogue with Bidzina Ivanishvili, the Honorary Chairman of the Georgian Dream party. Zurabishvili says there is little time left to discuss new elections and that the crisis can no longer be tolerated.
She reiterates her proposal from yesterday and urges Ivanishvili to meet within this week. The President believes that a compromise solution through dialogue is still possible, but warns of the consequences if it does not happen.
Zurabishvili accuses those in power of failing to act quickly enough and creating an unconstitutional situation by convening parliament without her involvement or the Constitutional Court‘s response. She also mentions that citizens have filed a complaint with Strasbourg, but notes that this will take time.
The President emphasizes that there is no legal or constitutional way left except for new elections. She demands that these elections be held in the shortest possible time and under conditions that will restore voters’ trust.
Zurabishvili offers to meet with Ivanishvili and representatives of his party to discuss a compromise solution. She warns, however, that if this is not achieved, there will be no other option but for the regime to collapse before elections.
