Ukraine Receives $1 Billion from US
The United States has given Ukraine $1 billion in profits from frozen Russian assets. This is the first part of a planned $20 billion from the US.
Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said this on December 24. He also thanked the US and the World Bank for helping to bring justice to Ukraine.
This money is part of a plan by the G7, which includes the US, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the UK. The G7 wants to help Ukraine with its economy and humanitarian needs.
Russia has condemned this plan. They say it’s unfair to use Russian assets to help Ukraine.
More Than $1 Billion in Damage
Russian forces have launched 60 drones at Ukraine from Russia overnight. This is a big attack, but Ukrainian authorities say they were able to rescue 14 crew members. Two are still missing.
This kind of attack is like the ones used by Germany during World War II. Ukraine says it’s using its own defense systems to stop these attacks.
The cost of this attack on Ukraine is unknown, but Russia has lost a lot in recent days. They’ve suffered over 1,600 casualties since February 2022.
Italy Helps Ukraine
Italy has sent 10 packages of military aid to Ukraine since the invasion began. This includes advanced air defense systems and other equipment.
Russia’s Invasion Continues
Russian forces are still in control of parts of Ukraine. They’re also using their airbases to attack Ukrainian cities.
The head of Ukraine’s counter-disinformation center says Russia is using one of its airbases to attack Ukraine. He warns that this could lead to more attacks on Kherson and other areas.
Ukraine Prepares for War
Ukrainian authorities are preparing for war by building anti-drone shelters. These will protect the country’s energy grid and help keep electricity flowing.
The EU Commissioner for Defense says it’s unlikely Europe will increase arms production for Ukraine in the coming years.
Additional Sanctions on Russia
The US plans to impose more sanctions on Russian oil by the end of the year. They’re targeting a specific part of the Russian fleet that they call the “shadow fleet”.
Ukraine’s government is drafting a bill that would allow students who have left the country to return and study in Ukraine again.
