In his evening address, President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that 220 individuals are still hospitalized following the Russian attack on Poltava on Sept. 3. Some of these individuals are in critical condition. Zelensky expressed his disappointment at the brutal strikes that occurred at the beginning of September. He mentioned that the Poltava Military Communications Institute was targeted by two ballistic missiles launched by Russia, resulting in the destruction of the institute’s building. A nearby medical facility was also hit in the attack.
Earlier in the day, the death toll from the attack rose to 58 after three victims passed away in the hospital, according to Poltava Oblast Governor Filip Pronin. Search and rescue operations at the site of the attack concluded on Sept. 5, with 55 people confirmed dead and 328 injured. In an interview with NBC News, Zelensky revealed that the missiles only took three minutes to reach their targets, leaving little time for people to seek shelter.
As the school year began in Ukraine, Russian attacks have increasingly targeted educational facilities. Overnight on Sept. 4, a number of schools in Sumy, Lviv, and Kryvyi Rih were hit. Poltava, a city with a population of around 300,000, is located in central Ukraine in Poltava Oblast. It is approximately 120 kilometers (75 miles) from the Russian border and 230 kilometers (143 miles) from the eastern front. The city and its surrounding region are frequently targeted by Russian drone and missile attacks.
