Lithuanian President Warns of Georgia’s Democratic Backslide
The Lithuanian president, Gitanas Nausėda, has expressed concern about the state of democracy in Georgia. He believes that Georgia is at risk of following Belarus’ path.
President Nausėda recently wrote on social media platform X that he had spoken with the President of Georgia, Salome Zurabishvili. He told her how worried he was about democratic backsliding in Georgia. This means that the country’s democracy is being weakened.
The Lithuanian president thinks that if things don‘t change, Georgia might have the same problems as Belarus. He believes this would be very bad for the Georgian people and their desire to join the European Union.
President Nausėda also supports a resolution from the European Parliament. This resolution calls for democratic elections in Georgia. He wants these elections to happen so that the Georgian people can choose their leaders freely.
