During a press conference following an informal meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers on August 29, 2024 in Brussels, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell expressed the EU’s deepening concern about Georgia’s current direction. He emphasized that the country is moving away from the European Union, which is a cause for extreme worry.
The EU has been vocal in its criticism of the ruling Georgian Dream party for its recent adoption of the Foreign Agents Law, increased anti-Western rhetoric, and anti-democratic actions. The EU has made it clear that it is considering all options to respond to these decisions. As a result of the government’s actions, the EU has halted Georgia’s accession process and frozen EUR 30 million from the European Peace Facility (EPF) that was designated for the Georgian Ministry of Defense.
