EU Expresses Growing Concern Over Georgia’s Direction Under Current Government, Says HR/VP Borrell

During a press conference following informal meeting of Affairs Ministers on August 29, 2024 Brussels, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell expressed the EU’ deepening concern about Georgia’s current direction. He emphasized that the country is moving away from the Union, which is a cause for extreme worry.

The EU has been vocal in its criticism of the ruling for its recent adoption of the Foreign Agents , increased anti-Western rhetoric, and anti- actions. The EU has it clear that it is considering all options to respond to these decisions. As a result of the government’s actions, the EU has halted Georgia’s accession process and frozen EUR 30 million from the European Peace Facility (EPF) that was designated for the Georgian Ministry of Defense.
