On November 10, Member of the European Parliament Andrius Kubilius expressed concern about Georgia’s recent actions, stating that they may harm the country’s desire to join the European Union. He pointed out that the ruling party has been speaking rudely about the opposition, refusing to make promises to the EU, and rejecting financial assistance. These actions create a negative image for Georgia and may make it difficult for the country to achieve its goal of European integration. Kubilius warned that the Georgian people may have to choose between the current government and real European integration in the future.
At a webinar discussing the impact of the 2021 local elections on Georgia-EU relations, MEP Viola von Cramon also criticized the ruling party for its rhetoric and misuse of administrative resources. She stated that the party is further away than ever from achieving real accession towards the EU and that the Association Agreement, which outlines democratic reforms, is not being fulfilled. Cramon suggested that there should be consequences for the government’s actions and that financial support from the EU should be reconsidered. Overall, she emphasized the need for the ruling party to fulfill its commitments towards democratic reforms in order to move closer to European integration.
