**Poland Offers to Help Ukraine with Electricity**
Poland is willing to increase electricity exports to Ukraine if Slovakia stops sending power, according to a Polish official. This comes after Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico threatened to cut off electricity supplies to Ukraine.
Fico made the threat in response to Ukraine’s decision not to transit Russian gas in 2025. Ukraine relies on energy imports from the EU because Russia has been attacking its energy infrastructure.
**Poland Ready to Step In**
If Slovakia stops sending power, Poland is ready to increase domestic electricity production and help fill any gaps in Ukraine’s energy system. A Polish official said that Poland can compensate for any shortage that Ukraine’s strained system would suffer from.
Ukraine is a key transit route for Russian gas to reach the EU. While most of the EU has stopped buying Russian gas, Slovakia still relies heavily on it.
**Russian Gas Transit**
Ukraine’s contract to transit Russian gas expires at the end of December. President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that Ukraine will not renew its contract with Russia. Energy companies from other European countries have called for continued transit of Russian gas via Ukraine.
However, EU sanctions have been slow to target Russian gas imports because of the bloc’s reliance on it. The EU first imposed sanctions on Russian gas in June, over two years after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
