At the Informal EU 27 Summit in Prague, Roberta Metsola, President of the European Parliament, brought up the issue of Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified military aggression against Georgia in 2008. She emphasized the need for a proportionate response in order for Ukraine to succeed in the ongoing war. Metsola also pointed out that the longer the conflict continues, the more opportunities Putin has to use threats, blackmail, and intimidation.
Metsola then reminded everyone of two previous instances of Russian aggression – the 2008 Russo-Georgian war and the 2014 Russo-Ukrainian war. She stated that Putin has shown no signs of stopping, and it is clear that he has no intention of ending the current conflict. She also noted that the world chose to ignore Russian aggression in the past, which has ultimately led to the current situation. However, she believes that foreign partners will no longer turn a blind eye to the matter.
The President then posed the question, “What are we going to do about it?” She pointed out that we have ignored Russian aggression before, and it has only led to more conflicts. She urged for action to be taken and emphasized that we should not look away now. It is time to address the issue and not repeat the mistakes of the past.
