Georgian Elections: Foreign Ministers Urge New Vote
The Foreign Ministers of France, Germany, and Poland have released a joint statement. They are concerned about the situation in Georgia after the country‘s parliamentary elections on October 26.
The ministers say that the OSCE/ODIHR report confirms their worries about the fairness of the election process. There were many irregularities and investigations into allegations were not done properly.
The Foreign Ministers state that the elections did not meet the standards expected of a country wanting to join the EU. They condemn the violence against peaceful protesters, media, and opposition leaders.
They also threaten to cut ties with Georgia and reduce assistance if things don’t change.
The ministers say they will implement an EU decision to end visa-free travel for Georgian diplomats. They are also considering more measures.
