White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan has announced that the United States is working to provide a significant military aid package to Ukraine. The goal is to deliver this aid by the end of the month. This aid is crucial for strengthening Ukraine’s defenses against Russian aggression and protecting important infrastructure. The timing of this aid is especially important as it comes before a high-level meeting between Presidents Biden and Zelenskyy at the UN General Assembly, where they will discuss Ukraine’s war strategy ahead of the US elections.
According to Bloomberg, Sullivan meets with his team daily to determine what resources Ukraine needs to stabilize the front and resist Russian advances. “We are currently working on a substantial package, pulling together a range of different capabilities that we are going to try to get out of the door before the end of the month,” Sullivan stated. He also mentioned that the US is in the process of securing air-defense systems from partners to meet Ukraine’s repeated requests.
Sullivan also emphasized the need for Ukraine to fortify its energy infrastructure against Russian drones. “We’re trying to deliver the tools for them to build more concrete barriers around energy transformers and substations,” he said. Additionally, the US is prioritizing the protection of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants, as Russia has shown a brazen disregard for attacking civilian energy infrastructure.
President Joe Biden will meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the UN General Assembly on September 22 and 23 to discuss Ukraine’s strategy for the ongoing conflict. “We are going to treat each single one of those days preciously when it comes to supporting Ukraine,” Sullivan said during a video conference at the Yalta European Strategy conference in Kyiv. He added that the meeting between Biden and Zelenskyy is a vital moment and a crossroads for Ukraine.
Zelenskyy has stated that he will present a “victory plan” to Biden that would force Russia to end its full-scale invasion, but he has not provided specific details. Ukraine is also urging its allies to allow the use of Western weapons to target military objects deeper inside Russia. Sullivan stated that the US’s goal is to put Ukraine in a strong position on the battlefield so that they can negotiate from a position of strength. The White House hopes to have a comprehensive discussion at the New York meeting that brings all the pieces together.
