According to Politico, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan has stated that Ukraine should take the lead in efforts to end the ongoing war, cautioning against any peace plans that do not respect Ukrainian sovereignty. He made these remarks at the Yalta European Strategy conference in Kyiv via video.
Sullivan emphasized that any peace plan that disregards fundamental principles such as sovereignty, territorial integrity, democracy, and freedom is not fair or sustainable. Since Russia’s invasion in 2014, various peace initiatives have been proposed, including those by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. However, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy‘s plan only includes the return of all territories seized by Russia.
The report also mentions other proposals, such as those from China and Brazil, which have faced criticism for not consulting with Kyiv while engaging with Moscow. Russian President Vladimir Putin’s demands reportedly include Ukraine ceding four regions and demilitarizing without guarantees against future aggression.
The article also highlights recent statements by JD Vance, Donald Trump’s running mate, outlining a potential peace deal under the Trump administration. Vance’s proposal, which aligns with Putin’s positions, suggests maintaining the current line of demarcation as a demilitarized zone and guaranteeing Ukraine’s neutrality.
Politico reports that Trump reiterated his claim that the invasion would not have occurred under his presidency in a video address to the Kyiv conference. However, Russian aggression against Ukraine began in 2014 with the annexation of Crimea and continued throughout Trump’s term.
Sullivan addressed the idea of quick external solutions to the war, stating, “Anyone who claims they can solve the Ukraine war in one day from the outside must be questioned about whose interests they are really serving.” He emphasized the importance of Ukraine taking the lead in finding a resolution to the conflict.
