**Moldova Turns to Romania and Ukraine for Electricity**
Moldova’s energy company, Energocom, will import electricity from Romania and Ukraine. This is because Russia stopped sending gas to Moldova on January 1.
Russia’s state-owned energy company Gazprom stopped supplying gas to Moldova. They said it was because of a debt owed by Moldovagaz. But an international audit did not confirm this debt.
This move has caused heating outages in the Russian-controlled region of Transnistria. As a result, Moldova is seeking alternative sources of electricity.
**Most Electricity Will Come from Romania**
62% of Moldova’s electricity needs will be covered by imports from Romania. The rest will come from thermal power plants and local renewable energy producers.
**Ukraine to Help Out at Night**
Energocom will also import electricity from Ukraine. This will happen at night when consumption is lower, and there are resources available.
**Moldova’s Energy Worries**
Last month, Moldova declared a state of emergency because of uncertainty over future Russian gas supplies.
**Russia Accused of Using Energy as a “Political Weapon”**
The Prime Minister of Moldova accused Russia of using energy as a way to control the country. This is after Gazprom stopped supplying gas on January 1.
