**Poland Snubs Hungary at EU Event**
The Polish government has not invited Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban and the Hungarian ambassador to the opening event of Warsaw‘s presidency of the EU Council. This was reported by Reuters, citing a Polish official.
According to Magdalena Sobkowiak-Czarnecka, Poland’s Deputy European Affairs Minister, the reason for this is Budapest granting political asylum to former Polish Deputy Justice Minister Marcin Romanowski. Romanowski is being investigated at home for suspected misuse of funds.
**Tensions between Poland and Hungary**
Poland and Hungary have been at odds since December 2023, when a new government took office in Poland. They were previously close partners under the previous conservative government. The two countries now have stark differences on key policy issues.
For example, while Poland has supported Ukraine’s resistance against Russian aggression, Hungary has opposed military aid to Kyiv and clashed with Brussels over rule of law issues.
**Poland’s EU Presidency**
Poland began its six-month rotating presidency of the EU Council on January 1. The country’s Prime Minister, Donald Tusk, said that security would be a top priority for Poland’s presidency and pledged continued support for Ukraine.
