**French-Trained Ukrainian Brigade Probed Over Mismanagement and Desertion Accusations**
The Ukrainian authorities have launched an investigation into the 155th “Anna of Kyiv” Separate Mechanized Brigade. The probe comes after reports emerged about inadequate personnel screening, equipment shortages, and desertion cases.
The brigade was deployed in Donetsk Oblast near Pokrovsk, which has been a main target for Russia’s ground attacks. Journalist Yurii Butusov revealed that most soldiers lacked sufficient experience. Out of 1,924 service members sent for training in France, only 51 had served more than a year, while the rest were either recruits or had less than a year of experience.
**Mismanagement and Desertion**
The investigation is looking into allegations of abuse of power and desertion within the brigade. It was reported that approximately 50 soldiers deserted during their stay in France, with the Land Forces command commission blaming brigade commander Dmytro Riumshin for insufficient work with personnel. The commander and several staff officers were dismissed.
**Equipment Shortages**
The “Anna of Kyiv” Brigade also lacks necessary equipment, including drones and electronic warfare systems. It was reported that the brigade received defective mortars during training in France.
**DBR Response**
The State Bureau of Investigation (DBR) is examining the facts reported in the media within criminal proceedings under Article 426-1 and Article 408 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
**French Position**
The French Defense Ministry declined to comment on the investigation, stating that personnel selection and deployment conditions are the responsibility of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. They did confirm that they trained a Ukrainian brigade of about 2,000 personnel for combined arms operations in 2024 using French equipment intended for transfer to Ukraine.
