On the night of September 18, an ammunition depot in Toropets, Tver Oblast, Russia was hit by drones, causing a fire and multiple explosions. Local residents reported hearing the sound of drones followed by explosions, according to Russian Telegram channels.
In response to the incident, the governor of Tver Oblast, Igor Rudenya, announced a partial evacuation of the population. Rudenya stated that the fire was caused by falling fragments of UAVs during an attack by air defense forces, but did not specify the target of the attack.
According to the BBC’s Ukrainian Service, a source in the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) claimed that Ukrainian drones had destroyed a warehouse containing Iskander and Tochka-U missiles, as well as guided aerial bombs, in the Tver Oblast.
The targeted site in Toropets may be connected to a military facility built in 2018. At the time, then-Deputy Defense Minister Dmitry Bulgakov stated that the “Arsenal of complex storage of missiles, ammunition, and explosives” met the highest world standards. He also mentioned that each storage unit could hold up to 240 tons of ammunition.
Russian authorities have not confirmed the explosion at the ammunition depot. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported shooting down 54 drones in various oblasts overnight, but did not mention the Tver Oblast in their statement.
