The Defense ministers of Romania, Poland, and Latvia have come together to urge NATO allies to strengthen air defense measures along the alliance’s eastern flank. According to Delfi, the Latvian Ministry of Defense reported that this call was made during a meeting of the “Bucharest Nine” defense ministers. Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds emphasized the urgent need for collective solutions to bolster NATO airspace.
The joint letter from the ministers was prompted by recent airspace violations by Russian drones. Spruds stated that Russian aggression continues to pose risks and threats to NATO countries, citing incidents in Latvia, Romania, and Poland over the past month. The ministers argue that NATO must enhance its capabilities to detect, identify, and neutralize low and slow-flying objects. They also call for the implementation of air defense rotation without delay.
In September, Russia violated NATO airspace in Latvia, Romania, and Poland. A Russian military drone, reportedly equipped with explosives and entering from Belarus, crashed in Latvia. This event, along with recurring drone incidents in Romania, has sparked discussions within NATO about appropriate responses to such airspace violations.
