**Transnistria Faces Energy Crisis**
Moldova’s Russian-occupied region of Transnistria has enough gas to last for 24 more days, local authorities said on January 8. Russia’s state-owned Gazprom halted gas supplies to Moldova due to an alleged unpaid debt.
**Residents Urged to Conserve Gas**
The region faces a severe energy crisis and a humanitarian one, according to Sergei Obolonik, the deputy head of Transnistria’s executive branch. Authorities urged residents to use wood and stoves for heating to reduce gas consumption.
**Thousands Without Heating or Hot Water**
Nearly 72,000 homes and 1,500 high-rise buildings in Transnistria are without heating or hot water, said Vadim Krasnoselsky, leader of the region’s Russian-backed administration. Moldova offered to help purchase gas through European platforms, but local authorities rejected the proposal.
**Regional Power Station Switches to Coal**
The Dniester State District Power Plant has switched to coal due to a surge in electronic heaters and gas shortages in power stations. Authorities warned of possible risks operating at full capacity due to the plant’s obsolete equipment.
