US Concerned About Georgia’s Democratic Backsliding
The US is worried about the state of democracy in Georgia. This was stated by US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken during a joint press conference with his French counterpart, Jean-Noël Barrot.
Blinken said that Georgia’s democratic backsliding is “deeply concerning”. He added that it’s not just a problem with democracy, but also a retreat from the goals of the Georgian people. These goals include building a future closer to Europe and having more freedom.
The US has taken action because of this situation. The country has sanctioned the leader of the Georgian Dream party, Ivanishvili, and other government members. Additionally, the US has suspended its assistance to the Georgian government.
Blinken also mentioned that many countries in the OSCE (Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe), including France, agree with this position. They have invoked a mechanism called the Vienna mechanism to show that the steps taken by Georgia’s government are not acceptable.
The US is united with other countries in its concerns about Georgia’s actions. Blinken stressed that there is “a clear unity of purpose” among the US, France, and many others when it comes to addressing this issue.
