**System Uses Hostages as Bargaining Tool, Says Lawyer**
The Georgian government is using the court system to show its power and scare people, according to lawyer Eka Beselia. She made these comments on a TV program called 360 Degrees.
Beselia said that the government is trying to make itself look tough through the courts. It’s taking hostages – in this case, people who were arrested during protests – and using them as leverage to get what it wants. This way, when the government gives in, it can say it released the hostages.
**The Judiciary is Key**
Beselia also said that the court system is key to the government’s power. The judges are supposed to be independent, but they’re not always acting impartially. In some cases, they’re even acting like prosecutors, which is not their job. This is because the government is using its power to control the courts.
**Case Going to Strasbourg Court**
Beselia is preparing a case for the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. She’s going to take this case along with other similar cases to the international court. The goal is to show that these trials are not fair and that the government is using its power to control the courts.
According to Beselia, if the judges were not acting like they’re serving the government, the government would be powerless. If you remove the police force, special units, and judiciary from the government, it’s just a empty shell. The judiciary is what holds up this repressive system.
