Eight people arrested for their role in group violence during protests remain in jail.
A judge made this decision after reviewing the case. The public gathered outside the courtroom was upset with the ruling.
The prosecution asked that the eight detainees be kept in prison because they might run away, influence witnesses, or stop the investigation from happening. They also said that the investigation is not finished yet and the detainees could interfere with it if they were free.
However, the defense lawyers left the courtroom in protest before they could speak up for their clients. This led to five new lawyers being assigned to represent the eight detainees.
Four of the detainees are minors, and one of them does not speak Georgian. Because of this, they had to have a lawyer chosen for them by the court.
The new lawyers said that they did not agree with keeping the eight people in jail. They believed that the judge should have let them go without any restrictions.
Three of the eight detainees face up to 9 years in prison. The other five could get up to 6 years.
