Germany’s Chancellor Olaf Scholz has been accused of blocking a plan to send more money and military aid to Ukraine. The proposed package was worth 3 billion euros.
However, Germany’s Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said this is not true. He said that the decision on the funding has yet to be made. In an interview with Tagesspiegel, Pistorius said: “There is no blockade. We have prepared a new aid package for Ukraine in the Defense Ministry.”
According to media reports, Scholz was worried that approving more military aid could lead to significant financial problems for Germany after early federal elections in February.
Germany has been one of the biggest supporters of Ukraine, providing over 4 billion euros in aid last year. The proposed additional aid would have included more weapons and ammunition.
Despite Scholz’s reported concerns, Pistorius has assured that Germany will continue to support Ukraine. He even announced a new shipment of guided missiles for Ukraine during a meeting with other countries’ defense ministers on January 9.
The decision on the funding package is still pending.
