**German Politician Supports Protests in Tbilisi**
Michael Roth, the Chairman of the German Bundestag’s Foreign Affairs Committee, started his visit to Tbilisi on January 13. During his visit, he met with opposition leaders and media representatives.
Roth is a strong advocate for new elections in Georgia. He expressed his support for the ongoing protests against the government and for Western sanctions against Georgian Dream members.
Roth characterized Georgia’s current crisis as a “serious conflict between autocracy and liberal democracy.” He said that the only way to overcome this situation is through new, free, and fair elections.
He also stated that he does not see any chance of bringing Georgia back on the European track with the current regime. Roth called for new elections to create a new legitimate government and parliament.
Roth praised protesters for demonstrating for European values, saying that Tbilisi is the true capital of Europe. He also appreciated individual sanctions against those responsible for violating peaceful demonstrators, rigging elections, and breaching the Constitution.
Addressing speculation about potential U.S. support for Bidzina Ivanishvili under Donald Trump’s presidency, Roth said such expectations were “unreasonable.”
