EU Officials Discuss Helping Georgia
Georgian voters are in a tough spot. Rasa Juknevičienė, a Lithuanian member of the European Parliament, said this at a meeting with EU officials.
She said that what’s happening in Georgia is not just a small problem, but something big. Three main things need to be done: don‘t recognize the government, put sanctions on it, and have new elections. The government, she said, needs to show it can be legitimate.
The US has already punished a man who helped the government stay in power by undermining democracy.
Juknevičienė said that voters’ rights need to be restored. “There is no other way,” she said.
Marta Kos, the EU official in charge of helping countries join the EU, agreed that more needs to be done for Georgia. She promised to prioritize the country and work with EU members to find a solution.
“We will discuss all three issues you mentioned,” she said. But ultimately, it’s up to EU member states to decide what to do next.
