Slovak Prime Minister Won’t Visit Ukraine
Slovakia‘s Prime Minister Robert Fico will not travel to Kyiv, Ukraine. This was stated by Tibor Gaspar, a deputy speaker in the Slovak Parliament.
Fico had invited Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to meet with him in Slovakia. In response, Zelensky said that Fico should come to Kyiv instead. But now it seems that meeting won’t happen.
Tensions have been rising between Ukraine and Slovakia over a decision by Ukraine to stop Russian gas transit through its territory. The EU has tried to reduce dependence on Russian fossil fuels after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Slovakia is still reliant on Russian gas, with losses estimated at 500 million euros per year. Fico has threatened to cut off electricity supplies to Ukraine and limit aid to Ukrainian refugees in Slovakia if the situation doesn’t improve.
