**EU Considers Ban on Russian LNG and Aluminum**
The European Union is planning to impose new sanctions on Russia. This includes a possible ban on Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) and restrictions on aluminum imports. The EU wants to punish Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
According to Bloomberg, the EU will vote on these new sanctions in February 2025. This will be the bloc’s 16th round of sanctions against Russia. The EU aims to phase out Russian LNG and impose gradual restrictions on aluminum imports.
**Restrictions on Russian Oil**
The new sanctions may also target Russian oil tankers that break international rules. These vessels are known as the “shadow fleet.” Additionally, more banks could be cut off from using the SWIFT system, which is used for international payments.
**EU Debates Sanctions**
The EU is still deciding how to impose these restrictions. Some officials want to use sanctions, while others prefer a softer approach through regulations. The EU’s largest importers of Russian LNG – Spain, Belgium, and France – are not expected to block the sanctions.
**Past Sanctions**
The EU has previously imposed restrictions on Russian gas imports in June 2024. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen suggested replacing Russian LNG with U.S. imports during a phone call with Donald Trump in November.
