Georgian Young Lawyers‘ Association Chairperson, Nona Kurdovanidze, is speaking out against what she sees as a pattern of political persecution in Georgia.
Kurdovanidze believes that the attack on Giorgi Gakharia shows signs of political persecution. She points out that there was a 15-minute interval between attacks on Gakharia and another person, Zviad Koridze. This, she says, suggests that impunity is fueling criminal behavior and that violence has become a tool of the Georgian Dream’s political agenda.
Kurdovanidze also notes that the charge brought by the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) against those involved in the attack on Gakharia is too lenient. She argues that the case likely has political motives and should be classified as such, rather than just an act of violence.
The Chairperson of the Georgian Young Lawyers’ Association also commented on the detention of Mzia Amaghlobeli, founder of *Batumelebi* and *Netgazeti*. Kurdovanidze believes that Amaghlobeli is being punished for her professional activities. She notes that Amaghlobeli was initially detained arbitrarily under an administrative offense, and later placed in pretrial detention without sufficient evidence to support the need for such a measure.
Kurdovanidze questions whether Amaghlobeli posed a flight risk or could influence witnesses, pointing out that other measures, like bail, might have been more appropriate. She also raises concerns about the legal qualification of Amaghlobeli’s actions, suggesting that they may not constitute a criminal offense as claimed by the authorities.
