Sweden Supports Georgia’s Pro-European Forces
The Swedish Foreign Minister, Maria Malmer Stenergard, recently spoke about Sweden’s support for Georgia. She said that her country will continue to back forces in Georgia who want the country to be part of Europe.
In 2024, Sweden stopped some direct cooperation with Georgia’s government. However, it increased its support for civil society groups in the country by 25 million Swedish kronor. The foreign ministers of several countries, including Sweden, also asked Georgia’s authorities to follow recommendations from a European organization and hold new elections.
Sweden will keep supporting pro-European forces in Georgia. This is because the country knows that Russia has influence in Georgia. Sweden wants to help Georgia become more democratic and part of Europe.
The Swedish Foreign Minister also talked about visits to Georgia. She said that her country needs to think carefully before sending officials to visit. This is because some groups in Georgia might not want the country to be part of Europe. By visiting, Sweden’s officials might give these groups legitimacy.
