Attack on Georgian Opposition Leader
Giorgi Gakharia, the leader of “Gakharia For Georgia,” was attacked at the Sheraton Hotel in Batumi. He suffered a nasal bone fracture and concussion.
According to witnesses, more than ten people were involved in the attack. Zviad Koridze, another opposition member, was also assaulted earlier at the same hotel.
“Ivanishvili’s order is clear – to target Gakharia in this way,” said Zviad Dzidziguri, a member of “Gakharia For Georgia.” He believes the attack is an act of political retaliation against the opposition leader.
Dzidziguri pointed out that Ivanishvili had spoken negatively about Gakharia on live TV just a week before the elections. He thinks this was a deliberate attempt to intimidate the public, but it will have the opposite effect and fuel further unrest.
The Sheraton Hotel has a global reputation for excellence. It’s unlikely they would claim the camera malfunctioned if footage of the attack becomes public. This could lead to an investigation into the incident.
Gakharia was taken to a clinic but later discharged. He is expected to recover from his injuries.
