The chairman of the German Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael Roth, has spoken out about the situation in Georgia. He met with media in Tbilisi and expressed his concerns.
**Roth Blames Regime for Attacks on Opposition Leaders**
Roth called the attacks on opposition leaders and civil activists “shameful”. He said that people in Georgia are fighting for freedom and democracy, but the police are responding with violence. Roth believes this has no place in a stable democracy.
**Georgia’s Democracy is at Risk**
Roth sees a struggle between liberal democracy and autocracy in Georgia. He warned that if the country loses its democratic path, Russian imperialism will win. This would be a threat not only to Germany but to the entire free world.
**EU Must Be Involved**
Roth expects more involvement from the European Union in helping Georgia resolve its problems. He believes autocracies use the same tools everywhere: discrimination against minorities and suppression of critical voices.
**People Will Not Give Up**
Despite the challenges, Roth notes that people in Georgia are not giving up. They are fighting for their country’s freedom and democracy. Thousands have taken to the streets to show their determination.
**Concerns About Elections and Constitution**
Roth expressed concern about two main issues: rigged elections and the violation of Georgia’s constitution. He believes Euro–Atlantic integration is enshrined in the constitution, and no one should stop Georgia from moving towards the European Union.
