**Moldova’s President Visits Ukraine Amid Energy Crisis**
Moldovan President Maia Sandu arrived in Kyiv on January 25 for an official visit. She plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The visit comes as Moldova struggles with an energy crisis in its Russian-occupied Transnistria region. While Moldova has switched to European energy supplies, Transnistria still relies heavily on Russian gas. Russia recently stopped sending gas to Transnistria because Ukraine stopped allowing Russian gas transit through its territory. Moldova also owes money for past gas deliveries.
Moldova’s government says the energy crisis is a form of “Kremlin blackmail” and a threat to national security.
President Sandu said she would discuss security, energy, infrastructure, trade, and mutual support with President Zelensky during her visit. She expressed strong support for Ukraine and its people, saying their courage helps keep Moldova at peace.
Moldova has been trying to move away from Russian influence and pressure since Sandu became president. The country has banned some pro-Russian political groups, outlawed Russian state-run TV broadcasts, and blocked access to several Russian media sites.
