**Kharkiv Governor Denies Russian Claims of Capturing Dvorichna**
The governor of Kharkiv Oblast, Oleh Syniehubov, has denied claims made by the Russian Defense Ministry that Russian forces have captured the village of Dvorichna. The governor said on January 28 that fighting in the area is ongoing and that the Russian claims are “pure propaganda” with no basis in reality.
**Russian Attempts to Secure a Foothold**
Dvorichna is located near the Oskil River, which has been an important geographic feature for Russia’s attempts to secure a foothold on the western bank. This would allow them to outflank Ukrainian defenses and threaten a rear attack in Kupiansk. The Russian military has been trying to do this for months.
**Previous Attempts Repelled**
The governor of Kupiansk town, Andrii Besedin, had noted earlier in January that Russian troops were trying to establish a bridgehead in Dvorichna. However, Ukrainian forces have successfully repelled multiple Russian assaults near the industrial outskirts of Kupiansk since September.
