The population of Serbia has decreased by half a million people over the last 13 years. This is due to more people dying than being born.

According to , there were 830,177 births and 1,374,745 deaths between 2012 and the end of . The country experienced its highest number of deaths during the COVID-19 in 2020 and 2021, with a total of 253,473 people dying.

The Health Organization said Serbia had one of the highest death rates per capita in the world during this time. Only had a higher rate.

Last year saw the lowest number of births recorded in Serbia, with just 60,311 babies born.
