The population of Serbia has decreased by half a million people over the last 13 years. This is due to more people dying than being born.
According to statistics, there were 830,177 births and 1,374,745 deaths between 2012 and the end of 2024. The country experienced its highest number of deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and 2021, with a total of 253,473 people dying.
The World Health Organization said Serbia had one of the highest death rates per capita in the world during this time. Only Bulgaria had a higher rate.
