**Romania’s Presidential Candidate Calls Ukraine a “Fictional State”**
Far-right Romanian politician Calin Georgescu has made some alarming comments about Ukraine. In an interview published on January 29, he called Ukraine a “fictional state” and said that its eventual partition is “inevitable”.
Georgescu suggested that Romania could claim some of Ukraine’s territories, including the regions of Northern Bukovina, Budjak, and Transcarpathia. He also implied that Poland would annex the city of Lviv.
This is not the first time a Romanian politician has made such comments. Others have also suggested annexing parts of Ukraine’s territory in the wake of Russia’s war with Ukraine.
**Background**
Georgescu achieved a shock success in Romania’s presidential election in November 2024, making him a front-runner for the second round. However, his results were annulled by the constitutional court due to alleged Russian interference and a hybrid campaign on TikTok meant to prop up Georgescu.
Despite this, he remains the leading candidate for the rescheduled vote in May with 38% of projected support.
**Context**
There are an estimated 150,000-500,000 ethnic Romanians living in Ukraine, concentrated in the border regions. However, Romania’s current leadership has been staunchly pro-Ukrainian throughout the full-scale war, providing military aid and facilitating the transit of Ukrainian agricultural products.
