Romania’s Presidential Candidate Backpedals on Ukraine Comments
Romanian presidential candidate Calin Georgescu has tried to walk back his recent comments about the partition of Ukraine’s territories. He called them “an absolutely theoretical hypothesis” in an interview with Digi24 on February 3.
Georgescu had previously said that Ukraine is a “fictional state” and suggested that Romania could claim some of its territories as a result of Russia’s war. He made these comments on Romanian television on February 2, saying that politicians who criticize him for his words are “short-sighted”.
However, Georgescu now claims that he was only talking about a hypothetical scenario. He said that the world is changing and that Romania should learn from its historical experience. He also mentioned World War II and how Romania’s borders were reduced.
Georgescu’s comments were dismissed by Kyiv as revisionist and contrary to international norms, the U.N. Charter, and democratic values. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said that Georgescu’s words are identical to Russian propaganda and show his dependence on Moscow.
Other Romanian far-right politicians have also made similar remarks in the past. Claudiu Tarziu, a leader of the Alliance for the Union of Romanians party, suggested that Romania should “reunite” with Moldova and parts of Ukraine.
Georgescu’s comments have sparked concern in Kyiv and were met with criticism from Ukrainian officials. The Ukrainian government has urged international leaders to condemn Georgescu’s remarks.
